August 2009 Inti-Ilimani & Francesca Gagnon perform in their debut appearance as collaborators at Orange County Great Park, Irvine, CA. Of their west coast premiere in Irvine, Gabriel San Roman of KPFK Los Angeles had these remarks:
With the wind whispering through the elegance of Francesca Gagnon's dress, the acclaimed singer of the Cirque de Soleil production "Alegria" took to the stage to join the masterful musicians of Inti-Illimani. As the storied Chilean folkloric group shuffled around switching instruments, Gagnon remarked to the audience that Inti-Illimani was a big circus-like production in its own right.
The west coast concert premiere of the synergistic pairing then went on to display an impressive musical dialogue of expanded horizons. The singer from Quebec, Canada delved into Inti-Illimani's vast repertoire adding her soaring feminine vocals to standards such as "Canna Austina." Likewise, the music of Cirque de Soleil was imaginatively reinterpreted with the traditional instruments of South America. "Zampo" a flutes transformed "Marelle" into an unforgettably haunting circus melody of the Andes.
Forged together, Gagnon and Inti-Illimani established an unmatchable depth with a presentation that traversed the babelian languages of humanity while exploring the melodic variances of its universal one. By the concert's end, the musical exchange between them proved to be a rich collaboration illustrative of music's indefatigable prowess as a place of peaceful encounter for the cultures of the world.
