Residency Project | | | INTI-ILLIMANI RESIDENCY PROJECT
We are the result of many, many metamorphoses and experiences that we do not own personally.I do not own my experiences. They come from a much earlier time, and they will survive me and go on to touch other lives. ~ Jorge Coulon, founding member of Inti-Illimani
It is rare that a single musical group carries with it the cultural, artistic and educational legacy as that of the 40-year strong Chilean band Inti-Illimani. We proudly present a unique and interpretive opportunity for a university residency- including all or several members of this celebrated, multi-dimensional ensemble. In addition to their esteemed musical expertise, Inti-Illimani offers an authentic, professional and vibrant culture of language, performance art, politics, travel, communication and history- easily translatable into myriad forms of educational opportunities.
Named the South American ambassadors of human expression, the Intis are something of a mythology. An energetic, persistent interest in connecting with self, personal history, humanity and the global world has and continues to carry into and influence their basic standard of musical excellence. In a world increasingly interconnected and interdependent, Inti-Illimani represents an unparalleled experience of these connections, as well as how one intuits, incorporates and ultimately is defined by them. A Brief History
The band was officially formed in 1967 by a group of engineering students. Eventually their passion for music and culture overtook other pursuits. In 1973, while on tour in Europe, the group learned that Chilean president Salvador Allende had been deposed. With the rise of dictator Augusto Pinochet came the exile of many Chilean musicians and artists, including Inti-Illimani. Six young musicians found themselves suddenly in political exile, without patria or passport. Italy became their home for the next 14 years, where they managed to not only stay together, but flourish, as a group. In 1988, they were warmly welcomed back to Chile, and celebrated as national, musical heroes. They moved back permanently to Chile in 1990.
Although a difficult and unlikely success, the experience broadened Inti s exposure to different musical forms and styles, adding depth and complexity to their already rich texture of sounds and stories from their indigenous cultures of Chile, Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador and Argentina. Today, they produce an original fusion of Latin American, jazz, Afro-Latin and Italian/European sounds.
In addition to producing 43 albums, they have appeared on Amnesty International stages and other benefit events with Peter Gabriel, Bruce Springsteen, Mercedes Sosa, Sting, Wynton Marsalis, Emma Thompson and John Williams. They have composed scores for several films including Flight of the Concord and The Devil s Miner and are currently working on the music for My Little World (July Films) and have instructed graduate seminars, collaborated with orchestras and choirs and toured the world.
Perhaps Inti-Illimani s most fascinating, famous and revered gift is the spellbinding choreography of 30 instruments as they are handed off in a seemingly effortless dance to one another throughout an Inti performance. There is no one-dimensionality to an Inti-Illimani member. Along with the two remaining originals, Inti s newer recruits not only meet this pre-requisite but add a modern, progressive and ever-evolving energy to their repertoire. Their music has been described as intoxicating, mellifluous, hypnotic, moving, emotional, and highly eclectic.
Founding member, Jorge Coulon, remarks that indeed Inti-Illimani is an Agora, or meeting point, and so views Inti s work as a cumulative but permanent musical work in progress. In celebration of their 40 year anniversary they released Pequeno Mundo, and by virtue of its title, Little World suggests to the audience the very essence of this prolific community of performers: a weaving together of a multi-talented, multi-ethnic, communicative and connected world.
